Cabbage Kootu

Hope everyone had wonderful holidays! Ours was great too 🙂  Last year I had promised myself to blog actively, try new recipes and post them here asap. I hope I did justice to my resolution, at least to some extent.. 🙂 Have lots of plans for this year too. Wish my dream of blogging about all our traditional Thanjavore Maharastrian recipes comes true! Wish me gud luck friends!

I made Cabbage (muttaikose) kootu with chana dal. There are lots of ways to prepare cabbage kootu. You can use chana dal or moong dal or even chickpeas too. I have already posted Cabbage kootu recipe with chickpeas (garbanzo/kondakadalai). This time I tried it with chana dal (Kadalai paruppu/ Bengal gram)

In this recipe, even though we pressure cook chana dal for 2 whistles, it would still be crunchy. If you want you can mash it before adding in the recipe. But I would prefer not to mash it.

  • When mustard spatters, add onions and sauté till transparent.
  • Toss tomatoes and fry till soft.
  • Add chilli powder and salt and cook for few minutes.
  • Add cooked dal and cabbage and mix thoroughly.
  • Add water to adjust the consistency (it shouldn’t be too thick)

  • Remove from stove top and serve with rice/chappathi.
